I had the pleasure of taking a road trip to Frisco, Tx. which is about an hour past Dallas, TX and it was a welcomed getaway. With the summer here in full swing and the travel season upon us, I wanted to write a little road trip guide for those of you who want to get on the highway and explore. We stayed at The Omni Star and it was great. The service was wonderful and the area was fantastic. And speaking of “fan-tastic”, The Dallas Cowboys training facility, The Star was incredible. We were able to take a tour and you can also train or work out at the facility as well. Two of my favorite places to dine nearby were Tricky Fish and La Parisienne. So let’s get into planning your next road trip.
There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a road trip. The promise of adventure, the freedom to go wherever the wind takes you, and the simple joy of the journey itself. Whether you’re a seasoned road tripper or a newbie looking to embark on your first adventure, this guide will help you plan and execute the perfect road trip. Buckle up, and let’s hit the road!
Timing is Everything: When to Leave
Choosing the optimal time to leave is crucial for a smooth road trip. Here are a few tips to help you pick the perfect departure time:
Early Bird Gets the Worm: Leaving early in the morning can help you avoid traffic and give you a head start on your adventure. Plus, you get to witness a beautiful sunrise—what a way to start the day!
Avoid Rush Hours: If an early start isn’t your thing, aim to leave after the morning rush hour (around 9:30 AM) or in the late afternoon after the evening rush hour (around 6:30 PM). This way, you’ll miss the bulk of the traffic and enjoy a more relaxed drive.
Check the Weather: Always check the weather forecast before you leave. You don’t want to start your trip in the middle of a storm or extreme heat. Aim for a day with mild, pleasant weather for the best experience.
What to Wear: Road Trip Fashion Tips
Comfort is key when it comes to road trip fashion. Here are some tips to keep you stylish and comfy on the road:
Layer Up: Weather can be unpredictable, and car temperatures can fluctuate. Wear layers so you can easily adjust to different temperatures. A light jacket or cardigan is perfect for this.
Breathable Fabrics: Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to keep you cool and comfortable. Avoid synthetic materials that can trap heat and make you feel sticky.
Comfy Footwear: Leave the stilettos at home. Comfortable shoes like sneakers, slip-ons, or sandals are your best bet for a road trip. You’ll thank yourself when you’re getting in and out of the car or stopping for a quick hike.
Stylish Yet Practical: Look for clothes that are both stylish and practical. Think joggers, leggings, or loose-fitting jeans paired with a cute top. Don’t forget a stylish hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
Do’s and Don’ts of a Perfect Road Trip
Do’s:
Do Plan Your Route: While spontaneity is the spice of a road trip, having a basic route planned out helps ensure you don’t miss out on must-see spots. Use apps like Google Maps or Waze for real-time updates on traffic and road conditions.
Do Pack Smart: Bring essentials like water, snacks, a first-aid kit, a phone charger, and a roadside emergency kit. Don’t forget your favorite playlists or audiobooks to keep you entertained. You can always listen to my you tube channel to pass the time.
Do Take Breaks: Driving for long stretches can be tiring. Plan regular breaks to stretch your legs, grab a bite, and enjoy the scenery. It’s not just about the destination but also the journey. We stopped at a cute little country store called Cooper Farms that sold all things peaches!
Do Stay Hydrated: Keep a reusable water bottle handy. Staying hydrated is crucial, especially if you’re driving long distances. Buccee’s prides themselves on having the cleanest restrooms so if you need to go, and you’re on a Texas highway, that’s a great choice. The only downfall is leaving out with too many great treats!
Don’ts:
Don’t Overpack: Space in your car is limited, so pack only what you need. Overpacking can make the car uncomfortable and cluttered. Stick to the essentials and a few comforts.
Don’t Ignore Your Car’s Health: Before you hit the road, make sure your car is in good shape. Check the oil, tire pressure, and coolant levels. The last thing you want is a breakdown in the middle of nowhere. Also, if possible do this a week or so in advance of your trip.
Don’t Forget the Snacks: Avoid relying solely on gas station food. Pack a cooler with healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, and sandwiches. This will save you money and keep you feeling good.
Don’t Rush: Remember, a road trip is about enjoying the journey. Don’t rush from one point to another. Take your time to explore, take detours, and enjoy the ride.
Road Trip Essentials: Don’t Forget These Must-Have Items
Packing smartly is essential for a successful road trip. Here’s a list of must-have items to bring along:
Electronics:
- Phone and Charger: Your phone is your lifeline for navigation, communication, and entertainment. Don’t forget a car charger.
- Power Bank: A portable power bank can be a lifesaver if your phone battery runs low and you’re far from a charging outlet.
- GPS Device or Navigation App: While your phone’s GPS is great, having a backup GPS device can be handy in areas with poor signal.
- Camera: Capture those scenic views and memorable moments with a good camera. Your phone’s camera works too, but a dedicated camera can offer better quality.
- Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot: Stay connected on the go, especially if you’re traveling through remote areas with spotty network coverage.
Comfort and Hygiene:
- Wet Wipes and Hand Sanitizer: These are essential for quick clean-ups and maintaining hygiene on the road.
- Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated with a reusable water bottle. Consider one with a built-in filter if you’ll be refilling from various sources.
- Blanket and Pillow: For those long stretches where you might want to rest or have a passenger who needs a nap.
- Toiletries Kit: Pack a small bag with essential toiletries like toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, and any medications you might need.
Food and Snacks:
- Healthy Snacks: Fruits, nuts, granola bars, and sandwiches are great options. They keep you energized and are healthier than gas station snacks.
- Cooler: Keep perishables and drinks cool with a portable cooler. It’s perfect for road-side picnics and longer trips.
Safety and Emergency:
- First-Aid Kit: A basic first-aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications.
- Roadside Emergency Kit: Include items like jumper cables, a tire repair kit, a flashlight, and basic tools.
- Maps: Yes, the old-school paper maps! They’re great as a backup if your GPS fails or you’re in an area with no signal. But always screenshot your directions just in case.
