If you dream of breathtaking glaciers, abundant wildlife, and luxurious onboard amenities, look no further than an Alaskan Cruise on the magnificent Norwegian Bliss. Our journey began in Seattle, with a pre-cruise layover at the elegant Westin Hotel, setting the stage for a truly unforgettable voyage. Join me as I recount my incredible journey from the bustling cityscape of Seattle to the serene, icy wonders of Alaska and beyond.
Embarking from Seattle
My adventure started with a flight from Houston to Seattle, where we spent a delightful evening at the Westin Hotel. Nestled in the heart of downtown Seattle, the Westin offered stunning views of the city skyline and easy access to the iconic Pike Place Market. Of course, I made my way down to the market for some dinner at Jack’s Fish Spot and some delicious pastries from Piroshkys. I slipped in a little shopping before the stores closed but of course, I’m a pro at that. After a restful night, we embarked on the Norwegian Bliss, ready to explore the last frontier.
First Stop: Sitka, Alaska
Our first port of call was Sitka, a charming town rich in history and natural beauty. We explored the Sitka National Historical Park, where towering totem poles tell the story of the indigenous Tlingit people. The hike was surprisingly easy & pleasant but fairly rainy. We even spotted a majestic bald eagle.
Juneau, Alaska: The Capital of Adventure
Next, we docked in Juneau, Alaska’s vibrant capital. No trip to Juneau is complete without a visit to the awe-inspiring Mendenhall Glacier. I opted for a glacial tour which consisted of a hike up the mountains to get an unparalleled view of the glacier’s icy expanse. Afterward, I went shopping downtown in quaint little boutiques and local shops. Shuttle lines weren’t long so I was sure to wrap up in enough time to return to the ship.
Ketchikan, Alaska: The Salmon Capital of the World
In Ketchikan, we immersed ourselves in the town’s rich cultural tapestry. The Totem Heritage Center showcased intricate totem poles, each telling a unique story. The highlight here was a quaint little booming garden downtown. I also visited Creek Street, a historic boardwalk with colorful shops and eateries. A lot of people went fishing in this town as fishing enthusiasts looked forward to a chance to catch the renowned Alaskan salmon.
Enchanting Victoria, B.C., Canada
Our final stop was the picturesque city of Victoria in British Columbia. Known for its stunning gardens and British colonial architecture, Victoria offered a delightful change of pace. I left the tourists and strolled through the outskirts of town looking for a speakeasy. I ended up at Clive’s Classic Lounge and it did not disappoint. Whenever I visit a new city, I always look for a speakeasy with creative craft cocktails and friendly people. Let me tell you, I found it all here. I want to return to Victoria to explore more. Unfortunately, we only had 3 hours at this port. I’m looking forward to returning to visit the famed Butchart Gardens, where blooming flowers and fragrant scents create a sensory paradise. I’m also looking forward to a traditional afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel.
Always Keep It Stylish
Let’s not forget to touch on the wardrobe. To stay warm, dry, and stylish on your Alaskan adventure, packing the right essentials is key. Layering is crucial, so start with moisture-wicking base layers and add a cozy puffer coat to keep the chill at bay. Waterproof ponchos and sturdy hiking boots will keep you dry and comfortable during shore excursions, while a stylish knit hat and gloves provide extra warmth. Don’t forget a pair of polarized sunglasses to reduce the glare from the icy waters and a versatile scarf to add a touch of flair to your outfits. With these essentials, you’ll be ready to embrace the elements in style. My Farm Rio reversible jacket was the star of the trip and I opted for Sperry rain boots.
A Luxurious Onboard Experience
While the ports of call were undeniably captivating, the onboard experience aboard the Norwegian Bliss was equally remarkable. I pampered myself in the ship’s luxurious thermal spa, featuring heated loungers, a therapeutic salt room, and a soothing hydrotherapy pool. I was also fascinated by the snow room! Specialty dining options, from the succulent steaks at Cagney’s Steakhouse to the delectable and entertaining hibachi-style Teppanyaki Japanese cuisine tantalized our taste buds each evening.
One of the highlights of our journey was glacier-watching from the Observation Lounge. The panoramic windows offered a front-row seat to nature’s grandeur as we cruised past floating ice and ice capped mountains and crystalline waters. The sense of tranquility and awe is something that words can scarcely capture.
Our Alaskan cruise on the Norwegian Bliss was a voyage of discovery, indulgence, and unparalleled beauty. Each port of call offered unique experiences, while the luxurious amenities onboard ensured our journey was comfortable and unforgettable.
